DeSoto Partners with GOODWILL for Annual Shredding and Recycling Event

In a bid to promote environmental responsibility, the City of DeSoto Service Center is hosting its annual Document Shredding and Recycling Event on Saturday, May 18.

The event runs from 9 A.M. to 12 P.M. and will take place at 809 W. Spinner Road.

This year, the city is partnering with GOODWILL to add clothing and shoes to the list of acceptable items that can be donated or recycled.

The collaboration with Goodwill expands the scope of the event, providing an avenue for individuals to declutter their homes while supporting a worthy cause.

The event is part of the city’s initiative to encourage residents to dispose of sensitive documents and recycle electronics responsibly and properly.

Residents can bring their tax documents, bank boxes, and paper files for secure shredding to help ensure confidentiality and prevent identity theft.

The event also accepts electronic items such as computers and gaming systems, along with clothes and shoes for recycling.

There will becity workers on hand, easily recognizable in their “City of DeSoto” shirts and will help participants with disposing of their items.

The event is designed to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills while also providing a safe way to recycle electronics, which can be harmful to the environment if not disposed of properly.

The city hopes this event will help reduce waste and raise awareness about the importance of recycling and secure document destruction.

This event is for DeSoto residents only and proof of residency is required.

Cinco de Mayo: A Celebration of Resilience and Heritage

As Cinco de Mayo approaches, communities nationwide are gearing up to commemorate this festive day’s rich cultural heritage and historical significance.

While often mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day, Cinco de Mayo actually marks the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

This year, as the world continues to grapple with challenges, the celebration of Cinco de Mayo serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength exhibited by the Mexican people in the face of adversity.

The Battle of Puebla was a pivotal moment in Mexican history, representing a decisive victory against formidable French forces.

Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, the triumph at Puebla symbolized Mexican unity and resistance against foreign intervention.

That triumph marks a sense of national pride that continues to resonate to this day.

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a vibrant celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, with festivities ranging from colorful parades and folkloric dances to traditional music and indulging in delicious Mexican cuisine.

Cinco de Mayo serves as an opportunity to honor the contributions of the Mexican-American community, which has played a vital role in shaping the cultural fabric of the United States.

From art and literature to politics and business, Mexican-Americans have made enduring contributions that enrich and diversify American society.

To commemorate Cinco de Mayo is to reflect on the historical significance of this day and its enduring legacy.

Beyond the festivities, Cinco de Mayo symbolizes the triumph of hope over despair, unity over division, and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

Mavericks Send Clippers Packing, Advance to Western Conference Semi-Finals

In front of an electrified crowd, the Dallas Mavericks, led by Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, moved past the Los Angeles Clippers with a decisive 114-101 victory, to reach the Western Conference semifinals.

Despite a challenging start due to Doncic’s knee issues, the Mavericks’ duo found their rhythm in the second half.

Doncic, the NBA’s leading scorer this season, tallied 28 points and 13 assists, while Irving erupted for 28 points after the half.

Irving culminated a 30-point performance that left the Clippers searching for answers.

Paul George scored 18 points and garnered 11 rebounds for the Clippers.

However, the absence of Kawhi Leonard due to knee inflammation was felt as the team struggled to maintain their offensive firepower.

James Harden put up 16 points and 13 assists but only shot 5 of 16 from the field and missed all six of his 3-pointers.

Russell Westbrook was a nonfactor, as he only was able to put up six points.

The Mavericks’ win avenges their previous first-round loss to the Clippers, setting up a highly anticipated matchup against the top-seeded Oklahoma City on Tuesday night.

As the Mavericks celebrated their hard-fought win and prepared for the Thunder, it came at a cost: losing Maxi Kleber, possibly for the rest of the playoffs.

The reserve power forward/center suffered a third-degree dislocation of the AC joint of his right shoulder, according to ESPN.

The Mavs will open the Western Conference semifinals at the top seed, Oklahoma City, on Tuesday night, May 7.

Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
