The Dallas Mavericks stayed alone in fifth place in the Western Conference Thursday and got back into the winning column, defeating the Atlanta Hawks 109-95 at home.

The Dallas Mavericks are one of the hottest teams in the NBA right now, previously winning seven games consecutively before dropping a close game to the Warriors 104-100.

But after defeating the Hawks, the Mavericks are a game ahead of the Phoenix Suns, which holds the final guaranteed playoff spot in the West.

Dallas, however, holds the tiebreaker on the Suns.

Luka Doncic finished with 25 points after not scoring in the first quarter, while Kyrie Irving finished with 26 points.

Doncic went 8-25 from the field and was 6-15 from beyond the ark and amassed 12 rebounds, garnering a double-double.

Irving went 10-21 from the field and only made three three-pointers.

The Hawks controlled the first quarter, leading the Mavs 31-25 after one quarter.

But the second quarter decisively belonged to the Mavericks, scoring 40 points to the Hawks 26.

The third quarter and fourth quarter were very close. However, the Mavericks duo of Doncic and Irving proved too much for Atlanta, even coming off a five-game trip, the longest of the season.

“We were little tired, first game back from a long road trip,” coach Jason Kidd said. “But I thought the chemistry and trust was showing again. It wasn’t pretty, but we did what we had to do.”

The Mavericks will host the Golden State Warriors on Friday as they look to close out the remainder of the season in the winning column.

Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.

A member of the Texas National Guard has landed himself in hot water after he was arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle an illegal immigrant over the U.S.-Mexico border.

Savion Johnson, 26, was arrested Sunday, March 31, after leading the officers from Texas DPS on a chase after turning around when he approached a pop-up checkpoint, according to Kinney County Sheriff Brad Coe.

“We don’t know what’s going on in their lives to make them do this,” said Coe. “But they’re going to get caught.”

The Border Patrol checkpoint was set off Highway 674 and had only been operational for a few days.

As the vehicle turned around, the behavior alerted DPS officers, who gave chase and were assisted by the Kinney County Sheriff.

The undocumented immigrant allegedly riding in Johnsons’ vehicle fled the scene but was later apprehended by officers and processed by Border Patrol.

Johnson was allegedly offered $5,000 to $6,000, according to NewsNation.

Gov. Greg Abbott, in a statement, issued a stark claim if the allegations are proven true.

“If the allegations are true, the accused is a traitor and criminal,” Abbott said in a statement to NewsNation Monday.

“We have zero tolerance for Texans who violate laws that directly contradict the mission we are seeking to achieve.”

Johnson is charged with evading arrest, smuggling of persons, and unlawful carry of a weapon.

He was deployed to Eagle Pass as part of Gov. Greg Abbott’s Operation Lone Star.

A new project is making a big splash in DeSoto.

The McCowan Aquatic & Recreation Center (MARC) is an approximately 75,000 square-feet, two-story facility that will serve the community in several capacities. These include recreational activities and competitive sports, including swimming.

“The City of DeSoto Department Parks and Recreation provides recreation programming opportunities to enhance the quality of life, specifically for DeSoto residents. This facility exemplifies the effectiveness of city wide long range strategic planning,” said DeSoto Parks and Recreation Director Chris Glover.

As part of executing the city’s master plan, DeSoto commissioned the construction of the aquatic and recreation center. Highlights of the project include:

*A full-scale indoor competition pool with eight lanes, equipped with observation decks on the second level, along with a leisure pool.

*Suspended above the first level is a roughly 400-foot fitness track for cardio workouts.

*The facility further boasts a fully equipped fitness area, as well as training studios for group activities.

*Nestled among soccer, baseball, and football fields, the McCowan Aquatic & Recreation Center offers city residents a fully functional gym and fitness experience.

The new facility is designed to offer health and fitness support to young families and provide a physical and social venue for active seniors through year-round senior activities.
Located in Curtistene S. McCowan Park, the facility is being realized as part of a larger master plan, which includes other public and sports-related amenities, including additional sports fields, an amphitheater, a sculpture garden, water features, and surrounding trails.

“Our need was based off of survey feedback from our residents during the master plan development and implementation phases,” Glover said, adding that the facility is projected to be available to residents and non-residents of DeSoto.

Glover said one of the city’s major objectives is to exceed the standard of excellence required to sustain the Certification of Accreditation of Parks and Recreation Agencies under NRPA (National Recreation and Park Association).

Residents are urged to update their contact information and utilize the provided temporary phone number for all non-emergency inquiries.
