Amateurs Invited to Field Day for Amateur Radio Relay League

Amateurs are invited to attend the annual emergency preparedness exercise (Field Day) of the Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) this weekend. The Southwest Dallas County Amateur Radio Club (SWDCARC) will be participating in the annual ARRL Field Day. This event is held in many different venues nationwide, and is intended to exercise the many different types of amateur radio equipment. Those participating attempt to contact as many different locations worldwide as possible.

The SWDCARC will hold their Field Day on June 22 and 23 at the DeSoto Fire Training Center at 501 East Pleasant Run Road. Parking is available behind the Training Center in Grimes Park. This is an overnight event, and visitors are welcome.

Field Day for Amateur Radio Operators

Even those who do not have an Amateur Radio license will be allowed to operate at the G.O.T.A. (get-on-the-air) station with a licensed coach. Several stations will be set up and available especially for guests.

Participants in the field exercise will begin operating on Saturday, June 22 at 1 p.m., and will take down the equipment before noon on Sunday, when everyone starts to get tired and hot.

SWDCARC Monthly Meetings

The SWDCARC meets the third Tuesday of each month in the music room at First United Methodist Church on Main Street in Duncanville. The Board of Directors meet at 6 p.m., and the General Membership meeting begins at 6:30 p.m.

Duncanville’s Independence Day Cook-Off Celebration

DUNCANVILLE, TX – The city of Duncanville is gearing up for a sizzling event this summer with the inaugural “Red, White, & BBQ” cook-off.

The celebration will kick off on Thursday, July 4, extending through Saturday, July 6, at Armstrong Park located at 100 James Collins Boulevard.

This year’s Independence Day Celebration promises to be a fun-filled event for the whole family, with activities and entertainment.

There will be live performances by Extended Play and Cruel Summer which will add to the festive atmosphere.

Gates open at 1:00 PM, and the fireworks display will begin at 9:30 PM.

Beginning Thursday, the event will kick off with a parade at 9:00 a.m., a celebration at 1:00 p.m., and conclude with festive Fireworks.

The event aims to bring BBQ enthusiasts from near and far to participate in a fun friendly cook-off.

With a guaranteed payout of $10,000, the competition is expected to attract a wide array of participants, eager to showcase their grilling skills.

The entry fee for the main cook-off is $250, covering four meat categories: chicken, ribs, pork, and brisket.

In addition to the main event, there will be a special Friday night steak jackpot, with an entry fee of $25, adding an extra layer of excitement for both participants and attendees.

Registration is currently open, and interested participants can sign up through a provided QR code or by visiting the Duncanville Recreation Center.

The event is organized by the City of Duncanville in partnership with the Champions Barbecue Alliance, ensuring a professionally run competition with industry-wide standards and judging criteria.

In addition to the cook-off, the event will feature live entertainment, food vendors, and activities for all ages, making it a family-friendly affair.

Spectators can look forward to a festive atmosphere with a patriotic theme, reflecting the event’s timing just after Independence Day.

Admission is free, but wristbands are required.

Wristbands will be available for pickup starting Wednesday, June 5, at the Duncanville Recreation Center.

Joe V’s Smart Shop by H-E-B Opening June 12

The wait is almost over! On June 12, South Dallas County residents can enjoy shopping at the first Dallas location of Joe V’s Smart Shop by H-E-B. The new store is located at 4101 W. Wheatland Road, just to the east of Duncanville and slightly to the west of DeSoto.

The new Joe V’s Smart Shop opening marks the cost-conscious store’s first location in DFW and outside of the Houston area. The 55,000 square foot store will offer the highest quality fresh products, combined with the “lowest prices in the marketplace,” their press materials read. That’s why their customers are known as “Smart Shoppers.”

The new store opens at 7 a.m. Tuesday morning on June 12, and it’s easy to predict some long lines for this highly anticipated grand opening. H-E-B, a San Antonio-based multi-format retailer, is known for pulling out all the stops at their opening events.

The new store is located at 4101 W. Wheatland Road in Dallas. Their innovative price format promises to deliver a uniquely curated assortment of community-focused products, and the high-quality, fresh products H-E-B is known for at even lower prices.

H-E-B is also opening a new store in Mansfield early this summer. The company also announced plans to open a Joe V’s Smart Shop at 5204 S. Buckner Blvd. in the spring of 2025. The concept launched in 2010, and currently employs more than 2,000 Partners across 10 stores in the Houston area.

The new Joe V’s Smart Shop in South Dallas County plans to employ more than 200 Partners, drawn primarily from the local community. H-E-B is known as one of the top employers in the country. Their employees at the new store will receive training, competitive pay, a robust benefits package, and career and leadership advancement.

The Southwest Regional Communications Center announced that they would use a temporary phone number for all non-emergency requests.

The announcement was made Wednesday morning via social media.

Residents in DeSoto, Cedar Hill, and Duncanville are advised to utilize a temporary phone number for all non-emergency requests until further notice.

Individuals seeking non-emergency assistance within these areas are encouraged to dial 214-789-3426 to contact the appropriate authorities.

The temporary measure only affects non-emergency calls, while the 9-1-1 service remains fully operational in all emergency situations.

While non-emergency services are impacted by this change, emergency services remain unaffected.

Residents are urged to update their contact information and utilize the provided temporary phone number for all non-emergency inquiries.

For immediate assistance or inquiries related to this temporary measure, individuals can reach out to the Southwest Regional Communications Center directly.

Winter Weather Impacts Trash Collection Schedule In DFW-When Will Your Trash Be Collected?

The arctic storm has impacted area trash collection throughout DFW. Here’s the most recent info on when your trash will be collected, weather permitting.

Arlington Trash Collection

Due to the current weather conditions, Republic Services has suspended residential trash and recycling collection for Monday, Jan. 15. Any uncollected trash will be collected on the next regular service day Thursday, Jan. 18. Recycling collection will be postponed until Monday, Jan. 22. Republic Services will continue to monitor weather and road conditions for Tuesday, Jan. 16. Additionally, the Arlington Landfill closed at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15 for the day because of weather conditions. Please check the City of Arlington’s social media accounts for updates.

Cedar Hill Trash Schedule-Monday’s Collection Moved To Wednesday

WM has shared that they are not able to service trash and recycling in Cedar Hill today (Monday) because of road conditions. Monday’s collection will be services on Wednesday. Sign up for trash updates and alerts at cedarhilltx.com/882/Trash-Recycling-Services.

DeSoto Trash Collection Moved To Tuesday

From the City of DeSoto: Due to the weather and road conditions, Republic Services has canceled residential garbage collection for tomorrow (Monday).

The initial game plan is for Monday’s residential trash pickup to be shifted to Tuesday, weather permitting. Republic Services will monitor the weather and the roads on Monday and will reassess and advise then if a Tuesday pickup is possible.

We will be in regular contact with Republic Services and will advise on Monday what the trash service situation will be for Tuesday and the rest of the week.
